NAUTICAL CARTOGRAPHY SYLLABUS – OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A SAY FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) invites input from industry The IBSC is conducting a routine review of the Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers, aiming to update the S-5 and S-8 standards by 2026. Initial consultations have been conducted at various events, and further consultations are planned for upcoming regional hydrographic meetings and conferences. The IBSC has prepared a questionnaire to gather inputs from stakeholders, and the IHO Secretariat encourages National Hydrographic Offices and institutions offering IBSC-recognized education and training programs to provide their feedback via the online questionnaire by 23 October 2024. The last revision of these standards occurred between 2014 and 2017, and since then, numerous technological advancements have impacted hydrography, including new survey/sensor technologies, increased data volumes, and advancements in ICT and next-generation products like S100 HDM. The IBSC seeks feedback on what new topics must be added to the standards, what can be removed, and the appropriate level of knowledge required for Category A and B qualifications. Stakeholders’ opinions are crucial in ensuring the standards remain relevant and effective.
